Rob the Rainman

September’s total was 42.7mm, 70% of the average expected. After the excesses of the summer months, September was pretty normal. It was a rainy period up to the 18th, but with dry weather too. There was enough rain to reverse the outward signs of the summer drought, green grass again, and temperatures above average, although a few mornings had an autumnal feel. From the 19th, we had an 8-day dry spell, which was sunny and continued the warm theme before the month went out on a wetter and very humid and warm period, with 13.3mm on the 30th being the wettest.

Finally, Upton Bishop has been a Met Office satellite for rainfall recording for many years. The present recorder (me) is finishing at the end of this year with no replacement in place to date. So if you fancy doing it (and this offer isn’t limited to Upton Bishop – other parishes are included.) You can contact the Environment Agency, which runs it on behalf of the Met Office on 0370 850 6506 and ask to be put in contact with their Tewkesbury Office and Henry Cox, who is the Hydrometry and Telemetry Officer.
